First Commoning Taster Weekend, Brighton, June 2022

“A real sense of hope through talking to people and hearing how people are actively working to work in their different commons to promote ideas and beliefs that promote equality and encouragement”

Comment from feedback survey by MCA taster participants, 26th June 2022

We had a fun and thought-provoking weekend, which offered an overview of commons and commoning, exploring a number of case studies that illustrated some of the current issues and debates. Friday evening involved an introductory session, in which participants shared their ‘rivers of life’. Saturday was taken up with an introduction to some key ideas connected with the commons, an in-depth exploration of three case studies and a keynote talk from a well-known scholar of the commons, Professor Massimo De Angelis. Sunday included a series of ‘lightning talks’, each one accompanied by a postcard with some key notes or quotes on that the participants could take away as an aide-memoire, followed by further group discussion and a period of individual reflection time to explore what the participants were going to take away with them from the weekend. The weekend closed with some collective singing and a walk in the woods.
